Luxury countryside holidays are more available in Estonia than anywhere else in the world. Estonia is renowned for its beautiful historic manors, many of which today accommodate hotels, restaurants and concert halls. Each year, the best estates are awarded in five categories. We selected ten manors whose visit will add elegance to the summer and large dose of beautiful nature and fresh air.
Kau Manor – Unique to the tiniest details
Only 50 kilometers from Tallinn, in the middle of forests and moors, is Kau Manor, whose long and colourful history dates back to the beginning of Estonia’s medieval times. The rebuilding of the historic manor complex located in the middle of the forests and spacious fields has inspired the rich history of the manor, and its thorough and fantastic renovations distinguish it from other ones of its kind.
Kau Manor is the destination for anyone who appreciates beauty and values adventure. In the main building built in grand Classicist style, you can enjoy the delicious dishes of Restaurant Kaheksa Jalga, spend time in the cosy library or explore the mansion gallery and stylish lounges. A spacious sauna and an indoor pool are open for guests in the stable.
Kau Manor has a total of 19 guest rooms with names inspired by the lifestory and world travels of the former owner of the manor, Otto von Kotzebue.
Kau Manor that was fully renovated and re-opened doors in 2012 won the World Boutique Hotel Award in 2016 as the boutique hotel with the world’s most marvelous interior decoration. This award is the world’s first and only recognition dedicated exclusively to luxurious boutique-style lodging establishments, providing a global arena where hotels can showcase their unique excitement.
Palmse Manor – A wine cellar and exciting cuisine
Most people in Estonia are familiar with Palmse Manor, its interesting museum and beautiful park. However, Palmse Manor also has a number of interesting dining places, two of which are located at the heart of the manor. Of these, the Palmse Tavern offers national dishes and displays an interesting exhibition of the life of locals working in the manor’s farm. Also the manor’s wine cellar with its exciting food and drink is an unforgettable experience.
Immediately next to Palmse are the manors of Sagadi and Vihula – this means an even larger selection of restaurants and entertainment to choose from in your manor holiday.
Mäetaguse Manor – Bathing House in the stable
The former restored stables that is part of the Mäetaguse Manor House complex located in the Ida-Viru county includes a very nice manor hotel, which is even more luxurious than at the peak of the manor’s activities. The hotel has 24 rooms in Scandinavian style, but the best part does not concern the rooms (although they are very nice). The Bathing House that is part of the hotel includes a spa and saunas (Finnish, steam, infrared and private saunas). The spa offers treatment for grown-ups and children. Other activities include the shooting range (after all, manor owners had to know how to hunt), illuminated hiking trails, rent poles for Nordic walking or bicycles or ATVs.
Alatskivi Castle – Life in a fairy tale
Spend a night in the fairy tale castle! Alatskivi, located at only a stonethrow away from the Lake Peipus, has long and rich history, and its castle with white towers is known by everybody in Estonia. On the second floor of the Alatskivi Castle there are four rooms accommodating for up to eight guests. Each room also comes with its own bathroom. In the most luxurious room – the Tower Room – has a bed at the corner tower. If necessary, two rooms can be connected to one family room. Breakfast can be enjoyed at the castle restaurant.
Kernu Manor – Summer filled with culture
Kernu Manor House which this year won the award for the best cultural manor house could be called a family business. The manor has been actively open only for a few years, but it already has a busy and varied concert and theatre program. In addition, the manor house organises various concerts without admission fee so that everybody can attend. In the summer a theatre operates in the Kernu Manor House, and different performances and concerts are held until the autumn.
Saka Manor – Sea view from a limestone cliff
Saka Manor is a small and romantic manor complex on the edge of the unique Ontika seashore, in the midst of pristine nature. At the disposal of hotel visitors are, in addition to the hotel and manor accommodation, also mini-spa, a pool area and a restaurant in the vaulted basement of the mansion house. In addition to the hotel, one can stay in a separate row-house in an apartment. We also allow caravans and tents, although without the luxury of the manor house. A marked hiking trail, a tennis court, a campfire site and village swings also help visitors to relax in nature.
Mooste Distillery – The favourite of photographers
The Mooste Distillery is located in Southern Estonia in the Põlva county, in the well preserved Mooste manor, on the shore of a picturesque lake. It is the smallest hotel in South Estonia, with only seven rooms in total.
The distillery built in 1909 has now become a centre for photo tourism, and invites hobby photographers to visit Mooste Manor House for a weekend. There are plenty of activities for hobby photographers who do not like camping or travels with his or her partner. It is a perfect location for photography – especially nature photography – and there are various training courses for photographers.
Also professional photographers are welcome and, for example, can rent a studio for their projects.
But above all, don’t forget a luxurious vacation in the middle of nature.
Padise Manor – Simple luxury
Padise is a wonderful place in the middle of woods and fields in the Harju county that is located 50 km from Tallinn. It is a picturesque rural area with an ancient castle hill, historic convent and the Padise Manor that is almost totally renovated. Von Ramms, the original owners of the manor, restored the manor building to its original share and opened a cosy hotel with 15 rooms including an excellent a la carte restaurant. This is a place where you can enjoy the rustic simplicity in a beautiful manor ambience.
The manor also hosts several high-quality chamber music concerts. For more information please check the manor’s homepage.
Vihula Manor – Idyllic nature
The elegant Vihula Manor in Lääne-Viru County, less than a two-hour drive away from Tallinn, is a romantic place that is also suitable for people spending a weekend with the family or friends. There are some old guest rooms at the disposal of guests staying the night, but the best part is definitely the spa. The eco-spa of Vihula Manor combines historical ambience and the luxury of the manor, traditions and modern amenities, eco-awareness and ancient spa rituals. The products used in the spa are 100% natural, the locally made creams and mixtures are always fresh and unique.
In addition, the mansion has fascinating natural surroundings and the manor’s restaurant helps to restore the calories lost during the day.
Pädaste Manor – The most luxurious island holiday in Europe
Pädaste Manor, one of the most elegant five-star hotels in Northern Europe, is known for its excellent restaurant and the top-notch service.
